Walgreen Co. to buy downtown DeLand pharmacy

13-Jul-2008: After more than a half-century of ownership, Ira "Buster" Adams is selling Orange Belt Pharmacy to Walgreen Co., said general manager Doug Wedekind, adding Adams is "finally prepared to enter full retirement."

The purchase is expected to close by the end of August, but terms of the agreement will not be released, Wedekind said in a news release.

The name will stay Orange Belt Pharmacy, and Wedekind and a staff of 31 will remain at the downtown store.

In a statement, Walgreen officials said Orange Belt's "reach beyond traditional retail services makes this an excellent strategic fit for us."

The agreement gives Orange Belt's customers access to Walgreens' pharmacy network. Home medical equipment and supplies will continue to be a major focus of Orange Belt, Wedekind said.

The acquisition gives Walgreens a presence in downtown. The suburban Chicago-based chain has three stores in DeLand.
